Why should I save water?

First of all, saving water will save you money. The tips outlined here will help to: 
  • Reduce your water and sewerage bills
  • Reduce the amount of hot water you use
  • Lower your gas and electricity bills
  • Protect the environment, and
  • Cut the amount of energy used to treat and pump water for everyday use.

You’ll also help your community to thrive. Drought threatens our water supply and the wellbeing of our communities. By using water wisely, you make sure there is enough to go around for your kids, neighbours, and community.

How can I save water?

Even small changes can make a big difference to the amount of water you use every day, so why not give it a try? Below are some simple tips to get you started:

  • Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth – this this can save you 9 litres of water a minute.
  • Always put full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher – this cuts out unnecessary washes in-between.
  • Fill a jug with tap water and place this in your fridge – this way you don’t have to wait for the tap to run cold before you can fill your glass.
  • Use a watering can in the garden instead of your hosepipe or sprinkler – garden sprinklers and hosepipes can use between 500 and 1,000 litres of water an hour.
  • If you can, take a shower instead of a bath – a 5-minute shower uses about 40 litres of water. This is about half the volume of a standard bath.
